It started with a humming.

Aloy had been hard at work refurbishing the house's computer systems, and then a tune came to her. She didn't recognize it, but it also didn't get in the way, so it hardly drifted to the top of her priority list.

"...Work it, make it, do it, makes us..."

Okay, that was odd. She tried to put past it. Had to focus on this motherboard, or she could fry the whole set-up--

"Harder, better, faster, stronger..."

She leaned back on her heels, blinking. "Work it harder, make it better, do it faster, makes us stronger, more than ever, hour after hour, work is never over--."

She threw down her tools. "Now what?" Annoying.

Sorry, Fandom. After several weeks of relative quiet in 4 Apocalypse, Aloy was... trying things again, with the computer system they had running now. Trying things that involved setting up a power grid on the ground floor, and since she wanted to make sure there was as little space between her new grid and her power source while she was testing it...

...the Sunwing was standing in the middle of the road, not far from her door, its solar panel wings firmly outstretched. The door was open, thick cables keeping it from slamming shut.

And she was in the hallway, meticulously fitting metal panels and circuitry into a very large hole in the wall.

Oh well.

There were things rolling around outside Aloy's newfound home. Things that, as she'd quickly found out, weren't particularly friendly.

She had discovered this while heading up to the castle to pick up Beta. She'd been careful, on the way back. And even now, as she closed the door behind them, Aloy couldn't help but lean back out--

--and fire three arrows into approaching ticklemonsters.

"I wish I could say this was new."

Getting a place to live in Fandom as an adult was almost as easy as Aloy remembered it being when she'd been a student. She'd walked up to Town Hall and asked about residences, and with just a promise that she'd get a job 'at some point in the near future so she could pay rent', they'd given her a key and directed her here.

Maybe if she'd been a woman from this time, she would have acknowledged that it didn't look fully like a home. The downstairs had been an office, and before that a gallery, and held that sense of a space meant for something else.

But Aloy wasn't a woman from this time. It was a place, with plenty of space, and a bed in the upstairs area that was about as comfortable as their base at home. She directed the Sunwing to the roof to recharge, and dropped her pack in the room with the bed.

Lots of space. Empty space, with just a sparse amount of furniture. Perfect.

She reached up for her Focus to inform Beta of her whereabouts.

"Right," she muttered, when that was done. "I think I can work with this."

"It's here. Somewhere."

It had been... well. It had been a good few weeks. She had set off for Nora lands with Beta in tow, for double purposes: to rifle through some data from old ruins in search of details she'd missed, details they'd need, and to spend some time with her sister. Show her--

Show her where Rost had raised her, and how.

And now, of course, there was the third purpose: finding the old portal machinery buried right here, at the heart of the Nora Sacred Lands.

"I think..."

Aloy's hand slipped through the grass into an unseen void. She pulled it back. "Yeah. It's down here."

Right! So! It's been a few years since Aloy's quiet stint as a student at FH, so I think she gets to have a longer one of these. It's just going to be full of incorrect shitposts from Tumblr. I'd say I'm sorry, but I'm not. (Everyone else in bullet points.)

Aloy had woken up feeling... crabby. Frustrated. Pent-up.

She'd tried to work it out through hunting rabbits in the preserve, but somehow even that involved too much thought, too little action.

So she'd swung by the junk yard on the way back and picked up a massive amount of small parts. She wasn't sure what she was going to do with it - maybe adapt her spear so she could interface it with the school's computers somehow? But she was going. To. Do it.

Anyone looking for Aloy would find her past an open door, sitting on the floor surrounded by a million parts, determinedly screwing things onto a stick. Yep.

Another day stuck on the island, another day with nothing to do.

So Aloy had elected to do something useful: she'd picked up a whole stack of books from the library, about the time, the place, and Portalocity itself.

She was now sitting on the floor, door half-open, picking through each book at the speed her Focus let her - though she was beginning to get the hang of just reading it off the page, too.

She'd be a while.

Well, after two weeks of camping out in the wilderness, hoping to figure out how to take one of those portals back... Aloy finally had to concede there wouldn't be a short-term fix to her situation. And with the rains coming in, she preferred to be somewhere with a roof over her head.

She clambered up the steps of the strange building, a small bag full of gear slung over her shoulder. She'd almost turned back when they'd confiscated her bow, but after a short, tense standoff-- well, she could always fight her way back to it if she needed to.

The guy at the weapons locker didn't look very strong.

She nudged open the door to her room, considering the strange furniture. "So much for hoping any of this would be normal," she sighed, walking towards the bed. She sat down on it.

Strange.

[[ open, though I'm gonna be gone a chunk of the afternoon. ]]

She'd lost track of Rost.

Aloy hadn't realized she'd lost sight of the old man until she heard the inquisitive beeping of a little one, without a soft, "Caution, Aloy" to accompany it. She'd been busy; the little ones had wandered further into their hunting territory than they usually did. Whatever thought drove them had given them meandering paths, touch and go, right up against the border, then further in...

She'd watched with the Focus. How couldn't she? If the little ones were making their way here, how much longer until they reached the hut? Maybe, she'd thought, if she knew what they were looking for...

And now Rost was gone. )

"Now what have I fallen into?" she wondered. (Rost would be worried, she realized. But when wasn't Rost worried?) She walked up to the arch, extending her hands to touch it. It was of exquisite, almost inhuman make, like everything the Old Ones had created. "But what do you do...?" she mused. "Ah. A button."

Most people didn't fall into strange caves and press strange buttons attached to strange portals leading to strange islands... but Aloy had never been most people.

Hello, everyone! It's me, your friendly neighborhood Dutchman, playing a character from your friendly neighborhood Dutch Game of the Year candidate, and if you don't think I'm stoked enough to brag about how my country made this until the year 2100, you probably don't know me.

Ahem.

Meet Aloy. )
